Michael Simmons, 19

Princeton Web Solutions, Hopewell, NJ

Michael Simmons and his friend Cal Newport founded Princeton Web Solutions two years ago to provide Internet service and Intranet solutions for medium to large businesses. The strength of their business lies in their experience in Web development, their tested processes, and a knowledge management system. To keep expenses low, the company employs a development team in Kerala, India that provides experienced graphic designers, HTML coders, Flash experts, and e-commerce specialists. As a result, Michael and Cal are able to offer professional Web development services for very competitive prices. In earlier days of the company, Michael says they almost never told customers how young they were. "Now we take advantage of the fact that we are a student-based enterprise, because we charge less for similar services than other companies," he adds. Their current rate is $75 per hour - half the rate of most of their competitors. The discount price isn't hurting Princeton Web Solutions at all - they report an average monthly income of $40,000.

Melissa Sconyers, 17

Ativity.com, Austin, TX

Melissa Sconyers also believes her young age is an asset to her Web design business. Her knowledge and design skills are in demand because she brings the teen perspective to clients who want to reach the youth market. Melissa reports that her company has grown more than 40% during the past year. Her average Website package runs a cool $2,000 - a competitive price that brings two to three new and repeat clients per month. Although Melissa spends seven or eight hours a day making her business a success, she doesn't mind. "I have lots of energy and I don't require a lot of sleep," says Melissa. She also supports charitable organizations and speaks at conferences such as Girls Start, Women in Technology, and Tech School 2001.
