After months of research, the YoungBiz staff has selected the winners of the second annual YoungBiz 100. Our quest to find America’s top business owners ages 19 and under led us to interview hundreds of teens, asking a variety of questions about the value of their companies, how they contribute to their communities, and what makes them successful.

Although this year’s YoungBiz 100 earned a combined total of over $7 million in 2000, a majority of the teens said that success can never be measured by money alone. We learned that this generation believes success is about doing work they enjoy, providing excellent customer service, and staking a claim in the business world by offering innovative, unique, and dependable goods and services. For this reason, YoungBiz 100 rankings are determined by entrepreneurial spirit, length of time in business, innovation, company size and value, management skills, community involvement, and overall profits.

Some of our winners for 2001 are repeats from last year, but there are numerous newcomers. One thing is no surprise, however. All of our winners are savvy business owners who are building solid reputations in their local and national business communities by demonstrating that teen-owned businesses can be dependable and profitable. A cool new word to describe tomorrow's best and brightest teens in business. An abbreviation of "entrepreneur," 'treps are those whose outlook and business-savvy are fresh, funky, and financially rewarding. Variation: eTreps, those whose main storefront is on the Net.
